GENERAL INFORMATION

Band at Spoto High School is a school-year long commitment and students must be registered for both Fall and Spring semesters to participate.  After school rehearsals and performances are required for all band students.

SYMPHONIC BAND/WIND ENSEMBLE

Admittance to a concert ensemble is by audition/director recommendation only.  Any students with band experience (at least two years) may register for Symphonic Band.  Admittance to the Wind Ensemble is by audition only, and band placement auditions will be held towards the end of the Spring Semester (March-April).  Any incoming students (Freshmen or otherwise) who do not audition for the Wind Ensemble will be placed in the Symphonic Band.  Students currently in Wind Ensemble DO NOT need to re-audition for the ensemble each year, however Symphonic Band students who wish to move up to Wind Ensemble will be required to audition.  

THE SPOTO MARCHING BAND

The Pride of Spoto Marching Band is an outdoor performance ensemble in which Spoto band students begin the each school year.  The band is comprised of students from Symphonic Band, Wind Ensemble, Percussion Class and Colorguard Class and performs at all home and away football games and at least 2 competitions each year.  All band students are required to participate in marching band in the Fall.  Click here to learn more about The Spoto Marching Band.    

JAZZ ENSEMBLE

Admission to the Jazz Ensemble is by audition only.  With the exception of guitarists, and pianists, it is required that all students who successfully audition into the jazz ensemble be concurrently enrolled in a concert ensemble (Symphonic Band/Wind Ensemble/Orchestra or Percussion Class).  

INSTRUMENTAL TECHNIQUES (PERCUSSION CLASS)

Percussion Class is open to all students with a background in percussion from band or otherwise.  Any students with percussion experience may register for Percussion Class.  The course is designed for high school percussion students and intended to provide them with the opportunity to study percussion intensively and participate in a percussion ensemble.  Students will have the opportunity to learn proper performance techniques on percussion instruments ranging from drumline and orchestral instruments (triangle) to ethnic percussion (hand drumming).  The class will also perform as a percussion ensemble and explore the diverse music in this genre.  The Percussion Class is also the percussion sections for the Symphonic Band and Wind Ensemble and the Drumline and Front Ensemble for the Pride of Spoto Marching Band.  Students will be required to attend all the performances for their respective ensembles.

EURYTHMICS (COLORGUARD CLASS)

Colorguard Class is open to all students with a background or interest in dance.  Any student may register for Colorguard Class provided they have a strong work ethic and a positive attitude.  The course is designed for high school colorguard students and intended to provide them with the opportunity to study dance and equipment manipulation intensively and participate in an outdoor and indoor colorguard ensemble.  Students will have the opportunity to learn proper performance techniques on colorguard equipment such as flags, rifles and sabers.  The Colorguard Class also provides visual impact for the Pride of Spoto Marching Band.  Students will be required to attend all the performances for the marching band.​
